Pro-Tip: The Origins of blues

When Port City Paint’s owner Mark, moved further south from his original home in Northern Virgina, he noticed once while relaxing on a friends porch that the ceiling was a light, relaxing shade of blue, and really thought nothing more of it.  That is, until the following week, at another friends home, the same thing: a blue porch ceiling.  Always the constant scholar, he obviously wanted to know why, and so he learned the origins behind the blue porch ceiling paint.

There are many sources online, (we used Google) that site reasons for the origins of the blue ceilings, but to summarize; originally in the south the blue ceilings had a specific job:  To ward off evil spirits or “haints”  thus, a very specific southern “haint blue” color was developed.  Now, however, it’s even thought that the blue might have an effect in warding off insects, especially wasps that build their pesky nests on porches, where people just want to relax.

That brings us to Bolivia.  Our Realtor friend, Carissa Kelley, Ebersole and Kelley Real Estate Team, Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, recommended Port City Paint to homeowners who were looking to refresh a few interior rooms, and their entire exterior of their house.  Were they moving?  Maybe.  Were they ready for an updated look?  Sure.  One thing for certain, when Port City Paint arrived on the job, the family dogs were more than happy to greet us with wagging tails and puppy smiles.  So Port City Paint got to work.

As the exterior of the house was being painted a bright new white on the porches and trim, Mark looked up at the porch ceilings, which would need a touch up, but he also noticed that they were home to some pesky wasps. Remembering the origins of the blue ceilings, Mark relayed to the homeowners about a project in Echo Farms in Wilmington where Port City Paint had painted porch ceilings blue. Mark told them that the Echo Farms ceilings looked dynamite, and so the homeowners agreed.

The final touch was when the porch ceilings were painted Sherwin Williams Atmospheric Blue.  Although this was just a small touch to the rest of the exterior, they do add that calming southern charm. When the homeowners added their rocking chairs back onto the porch, coupled with the fresh exterior, it just became a relaxing space.

Now, it may or may not help the wasp situation, it hasn’t seemed to deter all of the nasty pests for these homeowners, so maybe that part of the blue ceiling story is still up for discussion.  And we’re not really sure about the evil spirts either, but we do know one thing for sure:  The blue porch ceiling was a great touch to this home in Bolivia.
